Quintana Roo is a state in Mexico which is located in the Yucatan Peninsula bordering the Caribbean. Most people arrive at Cancún airport and then head down the coast to places like Tulum which is famous for its Mayan ruins, sandy beaches and undersea caverns called cenotes.
If you like the beach, the jungle and ancient civilizations, this part of Mexico is going to be a blast. In the waters of the Caribbean there are a number of coral reefs where you can snorkel or scuba dive in beautifully clear and warm water.
In Cancún is there are two waterparks. Sea Adventure is more suitable for younger kids, whereas Venture Park includes rollercoasters and zipline will provide an adrenalin rush for everyone.
Just a short boat ride away on the Isla Mujeres – which means Women Island – you can explore Dolphin Discovery which is a great place to get up close and personal with dolphins. There are a number of different packages available depending on how much you want to interact with these clever beasts.
Although cars are allowed on Isla Mujeres, most people get around on scooters or in golf buggies which are way cool! Once back on the main land you could become a pirate. Well almost. The tour is led by knowledgeable, friendly guides and is a memorable experience that is great for families. The highlights include feeding adorable spider monkeys, holding a baby crocodile and strolling through an area where 50 or so crocs roam free.
Once you leave Cancún , many people head down the coast to what is known as the Riviera Maya. One of the most popular places to stay is a town called Tulum, which has Mayan ruins right on the beach. Mayan ruins have been in Mexico for over 800 years and are reminders that another civilization used to live here. Another great set of ruins are the Coba ruins which are in a jungle setting which makes things even more exciting.
Sian Ka’an Biosphere is located just a short drive away from Tulum and is a protected park. It features 9 different eco-systems and his home to birds, alligators and lots of sea life which live on the coral reef. If you enjoy nature doing what nature does, then a visit to Sian Ka’an is a must.
If you still yearn for more Mayan culture and ruins the you really need to visit Chichen Itza, the most famous of all Mayan cities in the Yucatan Peninsula. It is now a World Heritage site. Chichen Itza is a wonderful ancient city which will probably create far more questions about Mayan culture than you could imagine, it really is a magical place.
A visit to this part of Mexico is often about the beaches, and to say the least, these beaches are stunning. There is plenty to do near, on and in the water, with parasailing, snorkeling, scuba diving, jet-skiing, wave-runners, ATV’s/quads.
